On April 1st 1963 Music and Show Agency Jan Vis was registered at the register of the chamber of commerce. It marks the official start of our company. Just a few months before Jan Vis and Mieke Vis- Verhoeven, the founders of our firm, first met each other in Blokker.
Mieke is active as an artist photographer and provides the business interests of the Yellow Rocks and together with others Jan organizes other events in West Friesland. They directly have ‘big names’ who perform in the auctionhall of Blokker. Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Robert Stolz, just to name a few. And of course The Beatles. At the only concert they ever did in our country. Moments later, the only 20-year-old Jan becomes the tour manager of the by him so admired Robert Stolz and at a young age that puts him to the big stages of Europe. It gives him an experience that will later come in handy.
In between business he also acts as manager of Boy and his Rollin ‘Kids. Mieke’s Yellow Rocks are contracted for the town Berkhout, close to Blokker and Jan’s Rollin’ Kids are persuaded by Mieke to the town Sint-Michielsgestel. The first collaboration is there. The reunion between the two on December 1st 1962 during a talent show in Rhoon, close to Rotterdam, is the beginning of a lifelong commitment. Love for each other and for the beautiful entertainment business lead to a marriage and a successful business.
was the enterance fee of £ 5.00 still too high?
The duo directly, expeditiously takes care of their business. In the Brabanthallen in Den Bosch a great show with Rocco Granata, Vince Taylor and good old Vera Lynn was organized. It is due to insufficient public interest – was that entrance fee of £ 5.00 still too high? – their first and only failure. Despite this fiasco the couple doesn’t despair. With hard work all creditors are being satisfied within a year. A new formula is devised. For now no more big, spectacular shows, but several smaller events at various venues.
Because of this concept many artists and bands, in expense and risk for Jan and Mieke, perform every weekend at all kinds of bars and cafés. The entrance-income is for them, the proceeds of the consumptions are for the owner of the location. At one place they lose, at the other they win somewhat. Success and setbacks alternate. After the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22nd 1963 some performances have to be cancelled. Also bad weather sometimes throw a spanner in the works. Yet over time Jan and Mieke Vis succeed to keep the balance positive. They seem to understand the art of programming and Music and Show Agency Jan Vis is getting more and more popular by the month.
The weekly adds in the Dutch papers bear a striking logo. A stylized guitar with two swinging legs. It soon becomes a mark of a successful evening. Former stars in the programs are: Johnny Lion & The Jumping Jewels, Rob de Nijs and The Lords, Ria Valk, Imca Marina, Anneke Grönloh, Ciska Peters, Sandra, bandparodist André van Duin, and so on. And often it is Jos Brink or Herman Stok that present these shows. Bands like The Motions, ZZ and the Masks, Golden Earring, Les Baroques, Sandy Coast, Cuby and the Blizzards, The Bintangs, The Shoes, Tee Set, Q 65, The Outsiders: they draw full houses.
